About the Robert Henderson Language Media Center (RHLMC)
Who We Are
In the Robert Henderson Language Media Center, we support the use of technology to enhance language learning. We are dedicated to serving the entire community of language learners at the University of Pittsburgh.
We are located on the ground floor of the historic Cathedral of Learning building, in which most modern language departments at the university are located. We are one of the three centers that are hosted by the Department of Linguistics, along with the English Language Institute (ELI) and the Less-Commonly-Taught Languages Center (LCTL).
Please see the People page for our staff information.
Who Uses RHLMC
RHLMC is open to all members of the language-learning community at and around the University of Pittsburgh. An instructor might decide to schedule her/his class in one of our multimedia-equipped classrooms. Students of ESL (English as a Second Language) at Pitt frequent our facilities. Independent users who wish to use our computer stations and/or our selection of language-learning materials also visit our center.
Services We Provide
Our technology-equipped facilities can be reserved for classroom use and multimedia creation. In addition, we have equipment that can be checked out by instructors, such as video cameras and laptop computers. We also assist in duplication of CD/DVD media, digitization and editing of multimedia contents, and data transfer of video/audio files created as part of classroom activity. For teachers who like to learn about exciting new technologies that can be useful in their instruction, we offer a weekly tutorial series in the form of a workshop.
Language Learning and Multimedia Technology
The incorporation of information technology in the area of education is accelerating every day. In foreign language education, in particular, computers and the multimedia capabilities they offer play an increasingly critical role. In the RHLMC, our mission is to promote and assist in the use of such technology in language learning and teaching.
