Developed by Cognitive Tutoring Authoring Tools (CTAT) at CMU, the tutor can capture moment-to-moment writing responses, encoding the stroke order information pertinent to the orthographic wellformedness of Chinese characters. This innovation can support formative assessment of character writing skills in foreign language learning settings. |

The GRS allows teachers to evaluate spoken grammatical accuracy as well as listening comprehension; students hear recorded questions, record their answers in class. French Online: From a Hybrid to a Pure Distance Course | French | In the fall of 2008, Elementary French Online I, a hybrid course at Carnegie Mellon University, became a pure distance in an alpha test of the software with Carnegie Mellon students in Qatar. The instructor, Bonnie Youngs, and the Department of Modern Languages' lab director, Marc Siskin, have worked since the beginning of August on the application of the courseware, previously used only as an on-site hybrid class on campus. This presentation will show video of the interactions between the instructor and the students in Qatar (successful and unsuccessful) and talk about the challenges of teaching in this environment while maintaining quality teaching practices and ensuring productive interaction in the target language between the students, and between the students and the instructor during their video conferenced class period. |
