Workshop for World Language teachers sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Modern Language Association, the Center for West European Studies (CWES), and the Robert Henderson Language Media Center at the University of Pittsburgh

Workshop description:

This hands-on workshop will begin with a frank discussion about the pros and cons of working with technology in the world language classroom. Participants will explore "Tapped In" and the resources this organization brings to language teachers, including on-going professional development opportunities as well as the availability of virtual classrooms that include features such as electronic bulletin boards, chatting, and email.

Finally, participants will become familiar with creating and using digital audio files in ways that make it easy to use with the language students.


Workshop Schedule:

8:30 – 9:00 am Registration
9:00 – 9:45 am Introductions; What every teacher should know about using technology in the language classroom
9:45– 10:45 am Virtual classrooms
10:45 – 11:00 Opportunity for networking
11:00 am – 12:00 pm Creating and using audio files with second language students
12:00 – 1:30 pm LUNCH
1:30 – 2:30 pm Participants work on individual projects
2:30 – 3:30 pm Presentation of projects & workshop evaluations

Presenters:

Devin Browne is the Chair of the Technology Committee for PSMLA. He is a French and Russian teacher with Pittsburgh Public Schools and teaches part-time for Pitt. He regularly presents on technology both at conferences and workshops.

Claire Bradin Siskin has been involved in computer-assisted language learning (CALL) since the early 80's.
