Rationale: Why to use video created by students?

Videos produced in class can be a great teaching tool. They are very powerful as a motivator. Students see themselves in the video as protagonists and they will pay more attention to any other regular video taken from the textbook. They can also see a more objective portrait of their language performance and development. It also serves as a great model for other students and groups. For the teacher it is an excellent way to recycle material and preserve best mementos of their student development as learners.

Classroom Activities:
The video clip is taken from La Bella y la Bestia, a production of a Spanish class at Perry traditional Academy. The video clip could serve for multiple activities. Below I am exploring some of the possibilities.

1. Listening Comprehension:
Objective:
The students will watch the video and answer simple questions on a hot potatoes quiz file or a Ms. Word worksheet.File on Disk

2. Describing the story:
Objective:
Students will watch the video and then retell the story in their own words.
Procedure: First, it is important to do vocabulary pre-activities and identify main characters.

3. Creating Script:
Objective: Students will watch the video clip without any sound and they create their own script.
Procedure: For this activity we will have a recorder to write the script on the board, and a video player to manipulate the computer.
Show the first two frames and construct the dialogue with the students. Collect the ideas, the sentences, discuss and have the
recorder to write on the board.Finish constructing the dialogue and then decide who the will Record the new dialogue. After recording edit the video and show the final product to the students. Make revisions and corrections as necessary.

4. Editing video: Normally a student-produced video has some "errors" in the vocabulary, pronunciation or grammar structure. One positive way
to improve the video is to edit it.
Objective: Students will watch the video clip and edit the video by adding, or doing corrections to the original script.
Procedure: Students will watch the video clip in groups of three, write down the "errors" and find best ways to improve and make corrections.
