Multimedia in Language Teaching Dr. Regine Fougeres Schenley High School June 25-29,2001 Project: The EURO

This PowerPoint presentation is a general introduction to the Euro, the new currency for the European Union. There are 12 slides, each of which has notes for the students to use to gather the requested information. The speaker notes are based on the information under the link(s) given for each slide. The student will open the given link(s) and take personal notes according to the outline in the speaker notes given for each slide.

Objectives: the student will be able

• to take written notes on each subtopic given in the slides
• to identify, select and write down content-specific information
• to identify member states and major dates for the EU's history
• to outline the timeline for the introduction of the Euro
• to identify and describe the new bills and coins (historical data)
• to do actual currency conversions
• to briefly identify some of the consequences of this new currency in the global market

Timeline:

The final report will be due according to a given timeline designed for the entire lesson. The process and completion of the lesson will depend on each class and the students' ability level. The students will be given this information before starting this lesson.

Evaluation: The student will

• hand in a draft according to a time line (variable according to semester)
• write a report (2-3 pages text, MSWord) based on the notes along with selected images and maps of the EU member states
• participate in a classroom discussion on the Euro: its emergence and its global impact on the rest of world, the hardship facing EU member states, the future of the EU in a global economy, especially the relationship between the US and the EU as two major global economies

The grading of the work is based on a Rubric specifically designed by the teacher for this lesson and already in the students' possession.
