What French to Teach? Teachers Respond

Presenter: Brett Wells of the French Program

Description: How to promote inclusion and linguistic diversity in language classroom? This research project by Brett Wells and his two collaborators looks at the extent to which teachers of French and English present (and teach) varieties in their classes. One of their data points focuses on free access commentaries (Youtube, podcasts, blogs) that communicate and disseminate received ideas (through written text, videos, images) and perceptions of French dialects. For example, they look at youtube users of a video like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwpH_MarfSM generates both within the performance (stand-up) and through the free access commentaries. Their corpus includes clips of various genres e.g., entertainment clips, educational clips, news clips.
