Grant Opportunities

Planning a trip to attend a conference? Looking to try new technologies in your classroom? How about that piece of software that promises to expedite your research experiments? The RHLMC offers funding opportunities for language instructors and researchers.

Conference Travel Grants

In order to help promote language faculty's professional development, the RHLMC offers support for conference travels. Faculty in language programs as well as graduate students engaged in language-focused research are eligible; funded applicants will receive up to $500. We are especially excited to support conference attendances that (1) focus on exploring roles of technology in language instruction, (2) involve active engagement either as a presenter or as a workshop participant, and (3) have a potential to benefit the wider language community at Pitt through knowledge sharing. Recipients of our grants are also invited to present their work/learning to Pitt's language teaching community through our TiLT (Technology in Language Teaching) Forum.

The Spring 2024 funding round is now open, due April 5 (Fri)! Please apply through this online form. Calls for grant application are made fall and spring.

Small Grants for Technology Adoption in Language Teaching

Every year, more and more software titles and online services are popping up that advertise marvelous benefits in language teaching. This is a small-grant program which encourages foreign and second language teachers (ESL & ASL included) to explore and adopt these technologies in their classrooms. The grant pays up to $150 per applicant for software or online service subscriptions. Recipients of this grant are invited to share their experience with the technology with their Pitt colleagues by presenting their findings at our TiLT Forum.

The Spring 2024 funding round is now open, due April 5 (Fri)!  Please apply through this online form. Calls for grant application are made fall and spring.

Small Grants for Language Research

Language researchers too often find themselves in need of software titles or online services that would super-charge their research project. The RHLMC may be able to cover the cost for such technology resources, up to $150 per applicant. The research project in question must focus on language pedagogy and second-language learning; priorities will be given to those that would deliver direct impact on classroom instruction.

Requests for this grant are accepted on a rolling basis; please send an inquiry to Na-Rae Han, the center's director.

Grant Administration

The RHLMC Grants are administered by an inter-departmental committee. The 2022-2024 committee include: Na-Rae Han (Linguistics), Amani Attia (Arabic program), Alana DeLoge (Quechua program), LaShanda Lemmon (Pitt IT), Kathleen Manukyan (Summer Language Institute), and Bill Price (English Language Institute).
