Level Up Language Teaching: AI-Powered Game-Based Learning Tools for SLA

Presented by Jeyra V. Vargas Sarmiento (Linguistics)

Description:
This interactive workshop introduces Second Language Acquisition (SLA) teachers to a variety of online game-based learning tools designed to enhance engagement, motivation, and learning outcomes in language classrooms. Participants will explore interactive presentation platforms for videogame-style learning experiences, live polls and quizzes, competitive quiz-based activities with adaptive features, customizable ranking tools for organizing vocabulary or grammar, performance-tracking quizzes for formative assessment, and game-show–style review activities for collaborative learning. Through hands-on practice, attendees will learn to integrate these tools into different stages of instruction—introducing new content, reinforcing key concepts, assessing progress, and promoting teamwork. Instructors will also learn to use AI to design these online games in just a couple of minutes. By the end of the session, participants will leave with practical strategies and ready-to-use ideas for implementing game-based approaches to SLA, fostering dynamic, engaging, and student-centered learning environments.
